Ms. Lila

In 2006, the trajectory of Lila Jokanovic’s life experience was completely re-routed when she came across Maria Montessori’s To Educate the Human Potential at the Chicago Public Library.  At the time, she had just completed her M.F.A. and was working as adjunct faculty in Columbia College Chicago’s graduate writing program. She had also developed a creative writing program for After School Matters at Paul Robeson High School. Dr. Montessori’s description of the purpose of “teacher” as guide, who observes the work of a child and guides them to their cosmic task had a profound effect on Lila. She visited Council Oak Montessori School, where she witnessed the brilliance of Dr. Montessori’s vision for education in practice, and enrolled in the teacher training program at Midwest Montessori Teacher Training Center soon after. She accepted the position of Children’s House Guide in 2008 and has called COMS her school home ever since. In 2015, Lila stepped into the role of Executive Director. In 2017, along with Igor and Davor Jokanovic and the COMS Board of Directors and Staff, she spearheaded the school’s purchase of its own building and move to Blue Island.

Lila loves having the opportunity to work with the “big picture” – curriculum and staff development, implementing new programs, working with the children and their families.

She has lived in Uptown, Chicago since 1999, but will be moving to Blue Island with her husband, daughter and cat by the end of 2017.
